Treaty of Versailles

The Treaty of Versailles was a peace settlement that was signed near Paris on June 28th, 1919. This treaty was the signed by the "Big Three," who were David Lloyd George of Britain, Clemenceau of France, and Woodrow Wilson of America. They talked and negotiated about the consequences and actions that Germany needed to do.

Territorial:
  • Land will be taken from Germany to compensate for other countries.
  • Some of the land would be made into new states.
  • The League of nations would take over Germany's control over seas.
Military:
  • Germany's army was reduced to only 100,000 men.
  • They were not allowed to have any tanks, or air forces.
  • As for their ships, they were only allowed 6 naval ships, and no submarines.
Financial:
  • Germany was to pay for all the damage they have caused to the nations that were involved with the war.
  • Germany was forced to pay for the reparations.
  • Also, Germany was forbidden to unify with Austria to create a super state. This was to limit Germany to their minimum economic potential.
War Guilt Chase:
  • Also know as Article 231, Germany was to pay for the damages and losses made by the country.
  • It made Germany say that they alone have caused World War I, and so it was their responsibility to pay for any damages done by them.
  • It made Germany known as a "rouge nation".
