Boston Red Sox (2013 World Series)

Source:

While the week goes by, and the world series continues, this picture was the one that stood out to me. The Boston Red Sox made it into the world series after beating the Tigers 5-2. I really liked this picture because of their reaction. They seem so happy they made it into the world series. This could be a chance for them to redeem themselves for their bad season. Also, a chance to really put the image of "Boston Strong" into people's hearts and minds. Even though I'm not that big of a fan of baseball, it intrigues me to watch it hoping that the Red Sox would win. The series brings people all around the world, rooting for the Red Sox and for the Cardinals. Baseball is like a business in a way. the teams own the people working for them, and the workers produce money for working and playing the sport. The "workers" are traded within teams, and they play against each other to see who is the best. This year, the Boston Red Sox is one of the two teams that is in and playing for the world championship. They made it this far from being at the bottom, they can make it to the top. They will show how strong and persevering they are. They will be Boston Strong.

Ellis Island Immigrants

Source:

The United States of America, the "nation of immigrants", was attracting a vast amount people who desperately wanted to leave their country and homes, to find a new place with opportunities, and a new place to call home. Many immigrants left their original homes to find a new place to live in the U.S. to escape any problems, religious or economical, and also to just see the American experience that everyone is talking about.

I chose this picture because it shows the anxiety that people would usually have while being interviewed. You can see in this picture that the man in the middle is the immigrant. There are 3 people with him, that are checking his information to deem if he is worthy enough to be accepted into the United States. You can tell that this part of immigrating to the U.S. was the hardest, because there was a chance that you could be denied entrance to the United States. So in the end, it was up to these people's hands to determine if you gave up everything for a new beginning or for nothing.

As you can see from this map, many people immigrated from many different parts of the world. They wanted to come to America, for their new opportunities and to experience the "American way."

Present Day Child Labor

Source:

This is a picture of a little 5 year old girl working in a brick factory. She earns only $2.77 per day, which isn't a lot in today's world. This picture really stood out to me, because this little girl is only 5 years old, and she is working and going through harder times than many people in America. The main thing that popped out to me though, was how she does not even have shoes. She is working in this environment with rocks and dirt, and she has no shoes. You can tell by her face that doing this everyday is tiring, but it's the only way she can help provide some even if a little money to her family. The little girl deserves more money than she is getting, because that is hard labor. People usually complain about; a hard boss, hating how they need to mop the floors, or just think working is stupid. Well, if she was in their shoes, she wouldn't complain. Getting a minimum of $8.00 an hour just doing those chores would be a miracle. In today's world we take many things for granted.

Lewis Hine's Photo of Child Labor

In this picture, I see a story of a little boy that is working for only about 50 cents a day. His work hours are from the early morning to late at night. He needs to help provide his family with at least some money for them to survive. This picture really stands out to me because of how young this boy is. He is working and seems like he is only 8 years old. You can really tell the difference between the man and the child, to see that the child is really young. Looking at the child's face he may be in trouble with this man. He could be in trouble because he couldn't sell all the newspapers he was required to do. His face is staring at the piece of paper the man is writing on. He has a worried and scared look on his face, while the man's face is very serious about it. I picked this picture because even during those times, men women, and children needed to work vigorously just to barely get by and survive.
